Sleep is a common metaphor used by anesthesiologists to describe general anesthesia. However, the same sleeprelated words may potentially connote one notion to anesthesia providers and a different one to patients. This can lead to misunderstanding or a failure to reassure, like in the following dialogue:

“Manually Ventilating Test” in Anesthesia Management of Children with Massive Anterior Mediastinal Masses Requiring Tracheal Intubation.A case series
The risk of life-threatening complications during induction of anesthesia in patients with anterior mediastinal mass is well recognized. Maintenance of spontaneous ventilation during anesthesia is an accepted standard goal in all published reports. However, the decision to paralyze the patient, which is really needed in most surgical procedures, is still a challenging event. In this study, “man...

Background and Objective: The Bispectral Index (BIS) is a neurophysiologic monitoring system, which continuously analyzes the electroencephalogram recording of a patient during general anesthesia to assess the patient's level of consciousness. When one is awake, the brain cortex is very active, with marked EEG signals. However, during sleep or under general anesthesia, the signal patterns chang...

متن کاملBOOK AND NEW MEDIA REVIEWS Sleep and Anesthesia: Neural Correlates in Theory and Experiment
After centuries of philosophical debate, techniques are now available that allow us to make meaningful inroads into understanding the neuronal underpinnings of consciousness. Studies that compare natural sleep and general anesthesia are at the forefront of this quest. Anesthetics are important tools that allow a rapid, reversible transition between states of consciousness. Many recent advances ...
متن کاملCentral Disorders of Hypersomnolence, Restless Legs Syndrome, and Surgery With General Anesthesia: Patient Perceptions
Introduction: The importance of obstructive sleep apnea in patients undergoing surgery with general anesthesia is well-defined, but the surgical and anesthetic implications of other sleep disorders are less clear. We sought to evaluate response to surgery with general anesthesia in patients with central disorders of hypersomnolence or restless legs syndrome. Methods: We surveyed patients on the...
